John Barton is an architect and Stanford professor who is a two term Trustee on the Palo Alto School District Board. He was first elected in 1997 and was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2001. He recently gained attention in his efforts to protect PAUSD and other Basic Aid school districts from the Governor's attempt to significantly reduce their funds. As a school board member, John has also worked to reduce class size, increase academic performance, raise teacher salaries and maintain fiscal discipline. PAUSD is widely considered one of the state and nation's top public school districts. John is an award winning architect, designer and teacher. He has taught architecture and urban design at UC Berkeley, San Jose State University and Stanford University, where he serves as a visiting scholar. He has also taught at Canada Community College and is a regular presenter at local elementary and high schools. John has an extensive record of community involvement. He serves on the board of directors for the Role Model Program, which seeks to provide positive examples for area young people. He is a board member of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce, and the Community Working Group on Homeless Services and serves as board president of the Redwood City Child Development Center. He is a founding member of a new non-profit, Californians for Improved School Finance, which advocates for Basic Aid School Districts and appropriate funding for all districts. He is a past board member and board president of the Children's Center of the Stanford Community. John grew up on the mid-Peninsula. His father is a law professor at Stanford University, and his mother is a lecturer at Santa Clara University. He attended local elementary schools, and graduated from Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. John received his B.A. and Master's Degrees in architecture from UC Berkeley. While at Berkeley he met and married Lydia Tan, who is Executive Vice-President of BRIDGE Housing Corp, Northern California's largest non-profit housing corporation. They live in Palo Alto and have two sons, age 14 and 11. John Barton is a college educator, architect, and school board member. His background, strong ties to the district, and broad contact base give him a unique set of skills which make him a particularly strong candidate in the 21st Assembly District. Among his strengths: John Barton is the only candidate with an education background, both as a teacher and as a two term school board member. He has the sole endorsement of the California Teachers Assciation in this race. John Barton is the only candidate who is a father and husband, and he has lived in the 21st Assembly District most of his life; John Barton represents more voters in the 21st Assembly District than any other candidate. Palo Alto Unified School District covers 90,000 residents in the heart of the 21st A.D.; John Barton has received more votes than any other 21st A.D. candidate. His home city, Palo Alto, has more voters than any other city, and they vote at a higher rate than any other large city in the district; John Barton has responsibility for a $103 million budget as Trustee of the Palo Alto Unified School District. This budget is larger than the combined budgets of his competitors. John Barton has been endorsed by key community leaders in every part of the district, from education leaders in San Jose, Redwood City, Sunnyvale and Menlo Park to current and former City Council members in East Palo Alto, Cupertino and Palo Alto. He has been endorsed by many leaders in his home town of Palo Alto, and many more are expected to lend their support soon. Based on early support, John expects endorsements from a broad coalition of housing advocates, environmental groups, business leaders and local labor organizations in coming months; John Barton would be the only architect in the State Assembly, and could offer design and business experience in the development of housing opportunities. John Barton has been a full time candidate since March 2003, and will be able to run full time through the March 2004 election John Barton has assembled a strong campaign team in both the district and Sacramento that has had great success in recent State legislative races.
