ON NOVEMBER 4, 2003 THREE NEW MEMBERS WILL BE ELECTED TO THE GOVERNING BOARD OF MONTEREY PENINSULA COLLEGE. THESE THREE NEW MEMBERS WILL CONSTITUTE A MAJORITY OF THE FIVE PERSON BOARD!

I am a candidate for the Governing Board. In my judgment this is a critical election for MPC since the new majority will be overseeing the expenditure of the proceeds of the $145,000,000 bond issue that was passed earlier this year.

This board will serve during a critical period for the College. With cutbacks in State funding and a number of key faculty retiring the College faces serious problems attracting new faculty and funding its operations so that it can retain its reputation as an exceptional learning center that meets the needs of a remarkable variety of local residents; college entry students, vocational students, nursing school students, lifelong learning for adults of all ages and a comprehensive arts and cultural program that serves the entire community. Dealing with these issues will be difficult in this economic climate. In my judgment new Board members must have knowledge of and experience in working with the College.

My late wife Caroline served on the Board for three terms. I worked closely with her on College issues during those years. The two of us initiated the formation of and provided essential funding for the MPC Foundation that has raised significant funds for the College as well as providing essential community outreach and community relations for the College. I am a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees.

My involvement and experience with the college will enable me to "hit the ground running" if I am elected. I will appreciate your support. If you have any questions about my background and experience or why I feel that I can be an effective Board member I hope that you will contact me.
