Water supply and DemandBy James WellingCandidate for Director; Boron Community Services District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The water issues in the near future that will affect our water supply and cost.Studies show that in 10 to 15 years water supply could be a concern. Population growth will be a big part, but so will the new federal restrictions on Arsenic levels. In 2006 the Arsenic level will have to be 10 parts per million or less per the federal government, and Califonia is considering a 5 parts per million restriction. At this time we are mixing our ground water with Antelope Valley East Kern(AVEK)water supplier, at a 50/50 mix and the arsenic level is much higher than 10 parts per million because of our ground water. If we increase AVEK water to a 60/40, 70/30, or a 80/20 mix then we are extremely dependent on an water source out of our control. We need to consider alternitives, like filtering or consevation. Studies show that families in the Antelope Valley, that includes us, use about 1 acre foot of water per year, families in the TSan Fernando valley use about 1/2 acre foot of water per year, and 5 families in Arizona use about 1 acre foot of water per year. If elected to this position, Water Board Director, I will address these issues. |
