1. Downtown redevelopment: Create a new neighborhood of affordable housing and businesses thereby increasing our tax base and giving some new life to our downtown. Right now we are losing sales tax to other nearby cities because they are proactively seeking new businesses and new businesses are being established as a consequence of their outreach. Solution: Contact many well known downtown developers (at least 10) and have them present their ideas (not necessarily in a formal expensive way) to the city. Let's get some good advice from many sources. Create affordable housing for teachers and city employees who work in Belmont. 2. Financial considerations because of the slow economy and state of California potentially siphoning off money from the cities: Solution: We must keep our essential services such as fire and police intact. Make sure our streets, sewers, storm drains are kept up to date so we don't have major and expensive repairs at a later date because of the delay. Solution: if necessary, shave our budget down to the bone but keep our essential services intact. Also if necessary, try to use volunteers to help: e.g.: the Belmont Police Department is currently now using volunteers to perform some non combative work. The city council has already made massive mid year adjustments to their budget to prepare for this shortfall. 3. Traffic, parking and speeding through our neighborhoods Always traffic, parking and speeding problems seem to a prime concern to residents. Solution: The city has conducted a study a few years ago and found some interesting things about how our traffic on Ralston Ave. is generated and who generates it. At this point, no one has used this study to make any determination of what to do. Let's re-examine the study. Solution: Other cities in California have similar problems with traffic, parking and speeding, and they have made their solutions available to the League of Cities through a comprehensive mailing list. So we don't have to re-invent the wheel again at the expense of the city, we should look at what other cities are doing to solve their traffic, parking and speeding problems. |
