Associate Justice William M. Wunderlich received his undergraduate degree in 1968 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He attended the four year night school program at the University of Pacific's McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, while working full-time during the day as a program consultant to the California State Assembly. He received his law degree in 1972 and was admitted to the California Bar later the same year.

In February 1973, Justice Wunderlich began his legal career in the Monterey County District Attorney's Office. He prosecuted cases until August 1980, when he became partner in a Monterey law firm, specializing in civil litigation. In October 1982, he returned to his work as a prosecutor in the District Attorney's Office.

In the June 1984 election, Justice Wunderlich challenged and defeated an incumbent superior court judge. He took the oath of office on January 7, 1985, and during the ensuing eight years as a superior court judge, had many assignments such as presiding over the juvenile court for two years and serving as Presiding Judge of the superior court in 1991 and 1992.

Justice Wunderlich was nominated to be an associate justice on the Sixth District Court of Appeal in January 1993 by Governor Pete Wilson. His appointment to that court was confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Nominations on February 4, 1993, and he continues to serve in that capacity.

Justice Wunderlich has been and remains active in his community. He has served on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross, Monterey County Chapter and the Monterey College of Law. He was a founding member of the Child Abuse Prevention Counsel of Monterey County. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Kinship Center (an agency providing adoption and foster care services) and the Monterey County Bar Foundation. He is also a member of the governing board of the Bay Area Chapter of the University of Nebraska's Alumni Association and in 1987 he was the first recipient of that school's Young Alumnus of the Year Award.

Justice Wunderlich has also participated actively in the management and education of the California judiciary. He has been an instructor at the California Judicial College and is currently a member of the statewide commission which oversees and controls the costs of appellate lawyers for indigent criminal defendants. He was the elected President of the 2,700 member California Judges Association in 1998-1999: He has served on the California Judicial Council and is the 2001-2002 President of the California Judges Foundation.

Justice Wunderlich was born November 2, 1946, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He and his wife Norma were married in January 1965 and have three adult sons.
