PUBLIC EDUCATION AT THE CROSSROADS

By James M. "Jim" Curtin

Candidate for Member; Sonoma County Board of Education; Trustee Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
"The greatest service our government can provide is a free public education. We must be proactive to maintain it"
A major reason our nation has emerged, as the leader in the world's political and economic structure is the free and unfettered public education system implemented by our founding fathers. Unfortunately this system is now in trouble. Overcrowded classrooms, disproportionate attention to other government programs and changing socio-economic conditions have diminished the capability of public education. Student dropouts are excessive and teachers are leaving the profession in alarming numbers. Parents are enrolling their children in private schools whenever possible.

I would suggest immediate attention to two action plans as a primary means of reversing this trend. First, increase the motivation and learning environment of all our students. Second, and equally important, increase the earning power of our teachers as a means of retaining and recruiting good teachers.

The alternative of not increasing student motivation and retaining/recruiting good teachers is the gradual diminution of public education. Our society will eventually be changed to where only the affluent can achieve a good education in the private sector. I would not want to forecast the resultant impact of this predicament on our country's future.
