I believe we must closely monitor the spending of the $180 million budget funds as well as the $140 school bond funds.By Steve BradfordCandidate for Board Member; Vista Unified School District | |

We will only get one opportunity to spend the bond funds correctly. The budget must be prioritized with the students and teachers as our priorities.Clearly we have "missed the mark" when it comes to the budget. In 2001 there was a projected revenue surplus of over $7 million dollars. We have now been forced to cut $9.6 million from the budget. The decisions that were made when the deficit was looming did not maintain our students or our teachers as our top priorities. (140 employees were terminated.) As a result of the passage of the school bond, the district has $140 million dollars in funds allocated to build new schools and to complete the much needed renovation of some of the older ones. These funds must be spent wisely. Every dollar must be accounted for and the new schools should be built in the most cost effective way possible while providing a quality product. The teachers are currently working under an expired contract. Our budget must take into consideration the needs of our quality teachers. I promise to closely monitor the bond funds as wellas the budget maintaining the students and the teachers as the district's TOP priorities. |
