The Water District is a respected and well managed organization.
The Soquel Water District is well managed, environmentally sound, and planning for the future water needs of this community. The purpose of the District is to meet the water needs of the community. As the current president of the District's Board, I believe that the District is in excellent shape. Over the passed few years, we have improved the system by increasing the amount of water that we store in tanks throughout the District, by replacing small and inadequate pipelines, and developing wells that provide the needed water. These new tanks and pipelines give us the ability, not only to deliver water, but just as importantly, to fight fires. You benefit by having lower fire insurance premiums. The District is fiscally sound and we keep our water rates as low as possible. Any new customers must pay nearly $5,000 to connect to our system. The quality of the water we deliver is good but we are improving it by the construction of advanced water treatment plants. The first of these is under construction and will be on line in December of 2002. Others will follow. I am working with the City of Santa Cruz and the Pajaro District to develop a supplemental water supply to meet a portion of our current needs as well as our future needs. This new water supply will be flexible enough to meet future demands, regardless of what they are. Because of my former experience as Chairman of the California Water Commission, I am working at the State level for grants and low interest loans to help pay for any new water supply.
