How fortunate we are to live in an area of San Jose where the school district is outstanding. After meeting with most of the principals in the district, I am impressed by the level of commitment exhibited by the administration, faculty and classified personnel. Award-winning, excellent schools are important to parents, but the greater community also benefits. Property values rise as a result of a district's reputation, making Evergreen an appealing area for families to settle. Well-educated citizens then become the high-demand workers and leaders in our society, and it is well-known that expected prosperity can be linked to education level. In fact, someone with a bachelor's degree will earn nearly $1 million more over his or her lifetime than a high school graduate (see Go to College, Make More Money). It is essential then to set the foundation for each child's education firmly and early. Students must be taught basic and critical thinking skills in order to continue to educate themselves into adulthood. As a candidate for Evergreen School Board, I am committed to making incremental improvements throughout our system. There is an ongoing need to increase the quality of education offered in a safe and academically rigorous environment. I would like to see the Evergreen School District communicate more effectively with its stakeholders, including parents, staff, community, and East Side Union High School District. Finally, in these difficult economic times, we must make every effort to maintain a balanced budget and be fiscally responsible with public funds. My years of service in the school, including four years on the School Site Council, have given me a current view of the issues in education today. I have a degree in Elementary Education, and have worked on several Evergreen Valley High School committees for the last 4+ years. Most importantly, I am the only candidate for Evergreen School Board who is a parent of school-age children. If chosen to represent this community, I will work for all of our children to establish a quality foundation for learning, a bridge of communication, and sound financial underpinnings in this district. I would greatly appreciate your support on 5 November 2002. Janet Orgill, Candidate Evergreen School District Board of Trustees |
