Candidate for
Board Member; Tustin Unified School District

I have a varied professional background that will bring a unique and very experienced point of view to the Board.

I put myself through college (University of Arizona) working first as a drive-time radio announcer on a "top 40" radio station, and then as a Police Officer on the Tucson Police Department, where I served for seven years. I became interested in the law while attending college, and immersed myself in that field. I applied for and was accepted as a volunteer Small Claims Judge (Hearing Officer), deciding cases and rendering judgments in the Pima County Justice Court. I also served as a Traffic Referee in the Juvenile Court, deciding cases involving traffic offenses by juveniles (another volunteer position). While this was all going on, I started my first business; a publishing company which produced mostly special interest periodicals relating to the then fledgling computer industry.

Upon graduation (with a B.A. degree in Journalism) I left the force to attend law school in California at Southwestern University School of Law. I did very well my first year, and was given a scholarship for the remaining two years. I was Editor in Chief of the Law Review. While still in law school, I worked at the California Attorney General's Office, preparing criminal appeal briefs on behalf of the State of California, opposing appeals filed by convicted criminals. I had a 100% success rate.

I graduated cum laude from law school and was hired by the country's largest law firm. There, I worked on cases ranging from minor real estate matters to multinational contract disputes involving hundreds of millions of dollars.

In 1991 I started my own practice. My practice areas include contracts, business litigation, First Amendment law, real estate law, employment law, and administrative law. My knowledge of these areas will be invaluable on the School Board, since so many matters presented to the Board involve contracts, employment disputes, real estate issues, etc.

I have worked as an Adjunct Professor at National University teaching litigation procedures. I am a writer and lecturer on the subjects of law, business organization and efficiency and computer technology. I have published innumerable articles in business and trade magazines relating to business efficiency, computers and computer software. I have been a featured speaker at such functions as the American Bar Association TechShow.

No other candidate for the School Board is an attorney. Since Jane Bauer is not seeking another term, the Board will be left without someone familiar with the legal aspects of whatever the Board might be considering.

As an attorney, I have dealt with contracts, real estate acquisitions, zoning disputes, and construction issues. I will not have any problem understanding the issues that will confront the Board.

As a business owner and owner of my own law firm, I know how to run a business efficiently. In fact, I am a lecturer on the subject. I will bring this knowledge to the Board, and use it to make certain that we are stretching our education dollars as far as possible.

As someone involved in construction contracts and procedures, I am very familiar with construction issues. I will bring this knowledge to the Board to make certain that our schools are built properly, on time, and within budget.

Most of all, my background as an attorney, judge, business owner and parent have all taught me how to be a mediator; to examine all sides of an issue and work to achieve consensus. In the final analysis, the most important trait of a Board member is the ability to get things done so that our children can experience the best education possible.
