Community health is judged by its schools. Then by this soul searching statement we must be living in an unhealthy community....An alternative to Measure A School Bond by Bob Oliver
RESPONSIBLE OR IRRESPONSIBLE
Some see the most current action of the School Board as heroic. Trustees slashed over $8M off a budget deficit ................ that has no beginning, no end, and shows no accountability. The Hand of the ax is just as swift as the hand that wields the pen. The difference being that the pen causes a much slower death . Teachers may find their futures missing. Students will find their teachers missing. MPUSD will still be looking for missing......
In order for there to be accountability everyone in the district needs to have basic information available to them. No one including myself should be making decisions on bad data and no data. This is exactly what trustees are attempting to do.
Requested information is not yet available from either the county or the district regarding particulars of the proposed Measure A Bond. By deduction, since the bond was to cost the tax payers nearly $500M over 45 years, then tax payers would pay about $11M per year.As a "tax" the full $11M yearly amount goes to the School district - so I'm led to believe. In 14 years the total amount of the original bond will be paid in full without the mortgage interest costs of the bond ($350M). In rounded off figures the district receives $150M and saves the tax payer $350M. The tax payer pays for 14 years instead of 45 years. The tax can be used for existing teachers and programs and repairs with a new set of values to guide its full potential - allowing continuity while change takes shape. Conceivably, the district might turn adversity into a new role model for Public Education. But! Each of us must take back our right of individual responsibility. .........could that be what's missing? The following message is brought to you by Bob Oliver & Monterey Moped / OLIVERCYCLE SON & DAUGHTER. "I NEED YOUR MONEY-THE SCHOOLS NEED YOUR MONEY.BUY A MOPED FIRST! AN ALTERNATIVE TO MEASURE A THE FOLLOWING IS JUST FOR FUN -life is short read on... Last Friday evening the MPUSD Trustees made huge cuts into the very fabric of what holds together our schools. Teachers and programs were cut across the board. Schools were closed and repercussions and new costs were ignored, or not yet considered. I have witnessed trustees claiming that they did not have adequate information to make many of these decisions - yet they did anyway. These cuts were coming with or without the Measure A Bond - which was solely for property renovations. Based on district facts, these cuts are unwarranted. Based on Public outcry these cuts are unacceptable.
I propose as an alternative to these cuts:1. Immediate State and local audit of the School District Financials - in order to get an accurate assessment of the financial problem. 2. Establish a realistic plan for the voters. One they will understand. 3. Propose a tax instead of a bond. Estimated savings $350 - $400M less than Measure A. 5 year tax raises 11M per year. "Pay as we go". 2nd tax bill once we know our needs.4. Keep our children's teachers and programs. 5. Ask for school volunteerism and community participation.
This proposal is made after evaluating the incredible potential we have in the people who spend the most time with our children.
Some of what I have witnessed include a library at Los Arboles with $100,000 improvements at little to no cost to the district. Children use the library in numbers you won't believe - unless you go see for yourself. MHS Restoration Committee has painted most of the exterior and some interior buildings at Monterey High School. The School Board estimate for this project was $400,000. MHS Restoration Committee, through its volunteerism program did it for $15,000 - zero $ cost to the district.
Do our schools need repairs and money? Yes, but not at the continued sacrifice of our teachers, programs, and children.
STATE AUDIT - NOW! > REALISTIC PLAN > NEW TAX > PAY AS WE GO > KEEP TEACHERS - PROGRAMS - SCHOOLS > ENLIST COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION.

On March 11th, at about 10pm - when good children should be asleep, a group of kids were armed in the streets. At the same time, an army of kids descended into the MPUSD Meeting armed with picket signs and knowledge. BOTH GROUPS WERE ARMED AND "DANGEROUS".
