Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Sean P. Dugar

Candidate for
Member, Board of Directors; Berkeley Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I have 3 objectives all of which will take some time to setup. The first being the creation of several community commissions. All of which will be comprised of: teachers, site and district administrators, parents, community members and students. These "School Board Commissions" will be given a problem i.e.. The Achievement Gap. They will also be given access to all written research on the problem they are addressing. The group will then have one year to actively research a solution to the problem. This is away to get everyone involved in the processes of the district.

The second will be to work with the union, city and university to find/create incentives to bring in new teachers and other staff of color. Increasing the diversity of the staff in the district will make student, parents and community members of color more comfortable when dealing with staff.

Lastly but again not leastly is the education of ALL students. One of the above mentioned commissions will be a student commission. Very similar to the City's Youth Commission the student commission will tackle problems of education not only at the high school but at all Berkeley Schools and will be responsible for making sure the students voice is heard by the board.
