A philosophical approach to averting a divorce between labor and management.
Moderation in any dispute, especially within the San Diego Community College District is an indispensible tool. In contract negotiations, the weight of all parties must be evaluated and all factors considered. These contributing factors include: The possible financial impact on the taxpayer, any potential shortfall in the budget, salary structure of both management and labor, obvious cost of living allowances, Federal and State funding allocations and perhaps, most importantly, an eye for true objectivity and an unbiased sense of responsibilty toward one's duties. The key to the Trustee's performance is political independence. Fundamentally, the Trustee's fiducial responsibility is to the concept of Public Education together with the public at large. Internally, organized labor plays a major role in boosting faculty morale not to mention the good service employees who are certainly a deserving group. So, the key is to reconcile the disparaties through thoughtful and careful deliberation.
