BIOGRAPHY

The Education of Akiva Freeman

Akiva Freeman is a life-long resident of Cincinnati. Born, raised and currently residing in Avondale, Akiva is a product of parochial education. A graduate of Purcell Marian High School, as well as Wittenberg University, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Political Science, Akiva has always had a keen interest in governance. At Wittenberg, Akiva worked with the office of student admissions to increase the presence and retention of minority students for the university. In addition, Akiva was selected to serve as campus representative to address issues of diversity in small, private universities located in Ohio.

The Work Experience of Akiva Freeman

While earning his degree, Akiva received a paid internship with the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA). He served as a seasonal employee with CMHA for three years, working in various departments. Upon graduation, Akiva served as a campaign coordinator for the U.S. Congressional race in his home district (District 1). Afterward, Akiva accepted a position as legislative assistant to a former Cincinnati Mayor and City Council Member. In addition to working in the political sphere, Akiva has worked for Miami University as an Admissions Counselor with primary focus on minority student recruitment and retention, as well as a Community Centered Banking Representative with Huntington Banks. Presently, Akiva is employed with Duke Realty Corporation, a full-service commercial real estate development and management company, where he is responsible for a budget of more than $1 million and the leasing and management of over 500,000 square feet of property.

- Board-member and co-chair for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

- Board-member for the Cincinnati Black Ambassadors

- Member of the Community Development Advisory Board (CDAB)

- Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity

- Member of the Avondale Community Council

- Member of the West End Health Center Board of Directors

- Member of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA)

- Member or officer of multiple committees of the Democratic Party.

- His work with Build Cincinnati led to historic changes in Cincinnati City government.
