Connie Rey Castro: Family, Work and Education

Connie Rey Castro grew up in a tight-knit family in Southern California. Her parents, like so many others raised in the difficult years of the 1930s and 40s, left school early to help support their families. That experience led them to instill in their children the value of hard work and the importance of education in the pursuit of the American Dream.

Balancing family, work and school, Connie began taking classes at Santa Barbara Community College while working fulltime. She graduate with honors, even earning the prestigious Ford Foundation Scholarship. Connie then transferred to Loyola University in Los Angeles, graduating with a B.A in Political Science. She then went on to earn her Masters in Public Administration from Loyola Marymount University and a Community College Leadership Credential from USC. Today, as Chair of the Social Science Department at East Los Angeles College, Connie is responsible for hiring, supervising and evaluating faculty, preparing the fall and spring academic schedule, overseeing the department's budget, and curriculum development and planning.

Connie Rey Castro is married to Dr. Daniel Castro, a Pasadena native, and President of Los Angeles Trade Technical Community College. Connie and Daniel have three grown children who all attended community college, and they are blessed with one grandchild.
