Addressing Growth Problems

By James Edward "Jim" Brink

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Westside Union Elementary School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Both immediate and long-range housing of excess student populations are needed.
The Westside School District has both immediate and long-range problems housing its growing student population. For the immediate future (pre-Esperanza school opening), relief will be necessary at Hillview Intermediate and Rancho Vista Elementary. In addition to the current overcrowding, more students will be added as new housing developments reach completion. Only two options exist: add more facilities or make better use of existing facilities. Once again, these options need to be outlined, with full systems-impact implications (cost factors, family inconvenience, etc.), and provided to community and staff in order to determine what needs to be done.

For the longer view, reliable projections need to be obtained and a masterplan needs to be developed that will address where and when to build additional schools, and how the funding will be provided. It is critical that the district involve local state and federal legislators in this dialogue and the solution process.

Everyone must be made to realize that there will be no painless solutions. Everyone will need to sacrifice something if the problem is to be solved.
