Smart Voter Full Biography for Frank M. Tavelman

Candidate for
City Attorney; City of Los Angeles

This information is provided by the candidate

Thank your for learning more about my candidacy.

My name is FRANK TAVELMAN, and I am a candidate for Los Angeles City Attorney.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I am the product of the public educational system, and after graduating University High School, I attended California State University, Northridge. While at CSU, Northridge, I obtained a dual major in both Finance and Real Estate, with a minor in Economics, all while working through school and graduating with honors.

After college I accepted a position with Mitsui Bank as a commercial lending officer, but I was always drawn to the law. I was offered a partial scholarship at Southwestern University School of Law (located in Los Angeles). While at Southwestern I gained work experience at both the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office. Due to budget constraints in the public sector, I accepted an in-house legal position with The Capital Group Companies (American Funds Mutual Funds), where I advised the company's boards and committee's on a variety of legal issues. Many of these same issues are the types which, as city attorney, I would be advising the City. These include real estate matter, contract negotiations, pension and retirement plan matters, to just name a few.

While working at The Capital Group, I wanted to serve the community more, and I became a reserve Los Angeles Police officer. After attending an 11 month part-time police academy, I now volunteer my free time working patrol in the city I love. Making our streets safer is not someone else's responsibility, but all of ours. As such I continue to work patrol to make our streets safer.

I desired yet more public service, and I left The Capital Group and eventually joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. As a Deputy District Attorney I am in court on a daily basis protecting the residents of our city and county from those violating the law.

Now I desire to further my service as your City Attorney. As the only candidate who has experience in three key areas: (1) criminal prosecution; (2) private sector legal experience; and (3) as a reserve police officer, I have the experience to lead an office which has the variety of legal issues the City Attorney must resolve.

Thank you again for your interest in my campaign, and please vote for me on APRIL 10TH.
