JILL BARAD FOR CITY COUNCIL 5TH DISTRICT

I have been a homeowner in Sherman Oaks for 30 years and have educated my three children here. I have been a business owner in this district for over 20 years. I have been honored twice by the City of Los Angeles for my civic leadership and accomplishments.

I have been an advocate all my life:
-An advocate for parents who want better schools and to have a decision-making role in the education of their children. I founded the Open School, the first community-initiated magnet in the LAUSD and still one of the most successful schools in the District.
-An advocate for seniors who want affordable housing in the community. I led the fight to build a senior housing complex in Sherman Oaks.
-An advocate for restoring Community Policing and the Senior Lead Officer Program. I organized a Town Hall forum and organized the community to be persistent in urging the return to community policing.
-As a business owner, I have been an advocate for making LA a more business-friendly city, and I have been outspoken in the need to reform the business tax system in LA., and I support the recommendations of the Business Tax Advisory Committee as a necessary first step.
-I have been an advocate for the residents of my community who want to protect the single family nature of the community--I led the effort to rezone our neighborhood and prevent developers from building two and three houses on single family lots.
-I was an advocate for the new City Charter and the creation of Neighborhood Councils, and I was active in the fight in the Valley business organizations to secure support for the new Charter.
