Reduce class size, promote higher qualified teachers, expand after-school programsMy desire to better the educational opportunities for my children, and all the children in my community, led me to run for school board and continues to motivate me as an Assemblywoman and a future Congresswoman. Between serving on the San Diego School Board and in the State Assembly, I directed a program to teach teenagers leadership and citizenship skills. From that experience mentoring teens, I learned that just as we need to prepare our children for our community, we need to prepare our community for our children. We have to make our public schools better and more accountable. I have always been an advocate for quality public education. I authored legislation to reduce class sizes, modernize our schools, improve teacher assessment standards, and promote teacher excellence through National Board Certification. In Congress, I will work to increase funding for fast-growing school districts like San Diego and support programs to help make sure that all our children have the opportunity to learn in a drug-free and gun-free environment. |
