Northern California's water is the lifeblood of our economy. We must protect our waterways, our delta, our groundwater reserves and the quality of all our water sources. On the issue of flood control, I fully support not only maintaining but improving the integrity of our existing system of levees and channels. Two years ago I spent 16 hour days with the National Guard repairing levees in Yuba County during the floods. I know first hand that much work still needs to be done. That is why I support Alternative 1, Existing System Conveyance, of the three alternatives curently proposed by CalFed. I am not in favor of water transfers. It is proposed that during periods of drought, we in the northern part of the state, should make up for the shortfall by pumping groundwater. We don't know what will happen if we do this. Certainly the people in the Owens Valey haven't had a good experience with water transfers. Once we start shipping water South there will be no end to it. Additionally, I'm concerned with environmental and conservation issues that will affect the largest estuary on the West coasts of both North and South America. We also need to be concerned with water quality. All the water in the world isn't much good if it's poisoned and it seems that MTBE may be doing just that. MTBE is a special type of ether added to fuel to oxygenate it and reduce carbon monoxide emissions. It easily dissolves in water and is practically impossible to remove from underground water supplies. Let's fix our levees, maintain the delta, keep our water and keep it clean. |
