Social PromotionBy Dave EvansCandidate for Governing Board Member; Healdsburg Unified School District | |

Intervention programs and special instruction help at risk students to get back on track.I have taken a special interest in helping to resolve the issue of social promotion. I understand that promoting students who are not performing at grade level is not in the students' best interest. However, studies show that the drop out rate for students who are held back one or more years rises dramatically. Last year the District formed a Promotion/Retention Committee comprised of teachers, classified staff and parents. We established a Board Policy and a system for early identification of at risk students. Parents are contacted and participate in developing an individual plan based on the student's particular needs. Intervention programs and special instruction are offered to all students. The district provides additional instruction sessions before school, after school, lunchtime, Saturdays and summer school. Individual progress is tracked throughout the school year to provide every opportunity for student success. |
