Public Involvement in SUSD Schools

By Ronni Wukasinovich

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Stockton Unified School District; Trustee Area 4

This information is provided by the candidate
Parents and other members of the Stockton community need to have more information about our schools.
Parents blame teachers, teachers blame parents. There's a lot of finger pointing when it comes to education and the students are the ones that are losing out.

Many schools in SUSD do not welcome parents. Yet administrators complain and teachers are terribly frustrated that they don't see parents enough. Parents have been rebuffed at schools and even at school board meetings. If a parent has a problem, SUSD should be happy to hear about it so that the administration, board or site staff can work with the parent to solve problems and make each child's educational experience the best that it can be.

One of the things that was negotiated away in the last teacher's contract was parent-teacher conferences. If parents aren't invited to the school, even once a year, then how can they know what condition our schools are in and how their student is doing in school.

We need to stop making it prohibitive for parents to find out what's happening with their children and visit the school sites. Better communication is a must, both out in the community and in-house. Internal communications have to be improved.

I want to make some real changes on the board, not bow to any kind of political pressure. I believe that I can work with other members of the board and SUSD administration to ensure positive change for our children.
