Our oceans, beaches, & wetlands must be clean and protected.

By Bill Borden

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Huntington Beach

This information is provided by the candidate
Each year we have hundreds of beach closures due to bacterial contamination. We must remediate this condition.
The bacterial contamination of our ocean has been attributed to three main sources. Urban run-off: the Sanitation District should be compelled by City Coumcil to contunue to fund the routing of storm drains to the sanitation plant for processing. Aging Infrastructure:County-wide our sanitation sewers are cracking and releasing raw sewage into the San Gabriel and Santa Ana Rivers. These obsolite lines must be relined or replaced if we are ever to solve this problem. Sanitation District leaks & outflow: Recently the Sanitation District was fined for a leak in Seal Beach which caused serious bacterial contamination. The District must be held accountable for its own infrastructure maintenance. Implementation of the Ground Water Replenishment Program could permanently solve the suspicious condition of treated effluent discharge 10 miles from our beaches. Finally, our wetlands and the plant and animal life sustained by them must be protected in perpetuity.
