The Resident as an Outsider
Despite being a long time resident of Santa Monica, it was not until I moved into the Pico Neighborhood nearly a decade ago that I became truly aware of the dramatic difference between what the City Council said they were doing, as opposed to what they were actually doing.
In short order I also learned: that what was supposed to be good for the city often as not wasn't; that what they claimed the residents wanted was more likely to be what the special interest group that elected them desired; and that the public "process" they had so often held up as a mark of concerned leadership had more in common with theater than representative government.
So I got involved.
And my involvement has grown steadily since, not just for my neighborhood, but for the residents of this city as a whole. It is an involvement that will go beyond this election, whatever the outcome, and move steadily toward the goal of a local government that cares about the residents and the city we live in.
It is an ambitious goal, I know. In Santa Monica, any person outside of the powerful moneyed interests that run this town certainly has their work cut out for them.
But I am in it for the long haul. And if you do decide, despite the odds, to join me in my efforts, you can rest assured that whenever you choose to get on board, and for whatever personal reason, you will only be welcomed.
