Parks & Street Beautification Program

By Dan A. Marostica

Candidate for Council Member; City of Walnut

Now that we have them, we must maintain them.
One of the greatest services this city provides it's residents are our 10 major parks and the 24-miles of hiking/equestrian trails.

Building them is the first step. My commitment is to maintain so that they remain attractive and usable for our residents and enhance these facilities to meet our growing needs.

In just this past year, I approved playground improvements at

o Creekside, which included the construction of a volleyball court,

o Improvements at Walnut Hills and Arroyo Parks, and

o the playground expansion at Snow Creek Park.

o I also approve a major renovation for Suzanne park

o And the appropriation of funds for a passive park at Country Hollow.

One of my major concerns for street improvement is Valley Blvd.

As a point of clarification, Valley Blvd. North of the centerline is in the City of Walnut. South of the centerline is in City of Industry.

A year ago, Walnut and Industry worked with Supervisor Antonovich's office on an understanding, whereby the Supervisor would use his discretionary funds finance a major upgrade to Valley Blvd, if Walnut and Industry would continue to maintain their own halves.

When it became time for the Supervisor's office to finalize the agreement, they discovered that due to a unique structuring of the Supervisory district lines, that the portion of Valley Blvd under consideration was in Supervisor Molina's district.

The initial response from Supervisor Molina is that she is not interested in spending any of her funds for improving Valley Blvd.

Our next step is to have City of Industry (who is in Molina's District) to arrange a meeting with her to try and persuade her to change her mind.

Another option is to hope the next re-districting will place Valley Blvd in Supervisor Antonovich's or Supervisor Knobbe's districts. Both of which have displayed a willingness to respond to our needs.
