JANICE M. NELSON, M.D. ---- BIOGRAPHY Janice M. Nelson, M.D. is a professor of pathology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and Medical Director of Blood Bank, Tissue, and Transfusion Medicine Services at LAC+USC Medical Center. A native of Jamestown, New York where she was born in 1951, Janice spent her first 24 years in Upstate New York. She attended public schools in Jamestown and was in the top ten of her graduating class at Jamestown High School in 1969. She then pursued her pre-medical studies at Syracuse University earning her B.S. degree in Biology in 1973 followed by medical school at S.U.N.Y. Health Sciences Center at Syracuse where she received her M.D. degree in 1976. Janice took her residency training in anatomic pathology at University of Florida Medical Center at Gainesville and her clinical pathology training at LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. She became board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology in 1980. She then remained at LAC+USC to become chief resident in pathology for two years while taking fellowship training in hematopathology and transfusion medicine. Janice was hired as the associate medical director of the LAC+USC blood bank in December, 1981 and began her academic career at USC. She was promoted to the rank of professor of pathology at USC in 1993 and to medical director of the transfusion service at LAC+USC in 1995. In addition, she is on the medical staffs of USC Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Hospital, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Providence Holy Cross Hospital, and Sherman Oaks Hospital and Health Center as a consultant in transfusion medicine. Janice has lived in the eastern half of Los Angeles Co. since 1978 and has lived in the 28th CD for as long as it has been the 28th CD! Currently, Dr. Nelson is the Commissioner of the Commission on Continuing Education for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and has served on the ASCP Board of Directors since 1989. She also is on the Board of Directors of both the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and the San Gabriel Valley Y.W.C.A. (V.P. for Programs) and belongs to numerous organizations including the Sierra Madre Rotary (founding member), Sierra Club, League of Women Voters (East San Gabriel Valley Chapter), American Association of University Women, NAACP (San Gabriel Valley Branch), National Women's Political Caucus, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of the Pomona Valley, and the National Organization for Women. In 1998, Janice was the Democratic candidate in the 28th District U.S. House of Representatives race in which she received 39.3% of the vote as a first-time candidate in a five-person race. She remains active in Democratic Party politics and is the female recipient of the 59th Assembly District's "Democrat of the Year" award for 1999. In addition, Janice is a State Democratic Party Central Committee delegate and a member of the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee. Dr. Nelson lives in Sierra Madre with her husband, Sierra Madre City Councilman Doug Hayes, who served as Mayor between 4/98 and 4/99. |
