Rose Jacobs Gibson SAN MATEO COUNTY SUPERVISOR # ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Youth:

Coordinated meetings to discuss the use and sale of "bidis", tobacco products aimed directly at children. Encouraged County Sheriff to enforce applicable laws.

Assisted the North Fair Oaks Neighborhood in receiving an appropriation of $100,000 from the California state budget for the construction of a playground.

Assisted with the coordination of the County's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Summit.

Co-Chaired the "Summer Jobs for Youth" Breakfast.

Continued funding for after school homework centers

Transportation:

Voted in favor of the establishment of the EVP (Economic Vitality Partnership) which will look at regional transportation problems in a collaborative way.

Encouraged SamTrans to establish late night and weekend service between Stanford University and East Palo Alto.

Succeeded in getting SamTrans to repair railroad crossings in the North Fair Oaks neighborhood.

Housing:

Organized high level housing policy meeting attended by a wide range of people involved in all aspects of housing in the County, including State Senator Byron Sher.

Organized special meetings to look at issues of accountability and effectiveness concerning Section 8 housing and the San Mateo County Housing Authority.

Environment:

Demanded accountability from agencies responsible for the clean-up of toxic lead waste at an abandoned gun club site adjacent to San Francisco Bay.

Requested a review of all toxics and chemicals in San Mateo County Parks.

Constituent Service:

Organized open office hours in each of the communities in the Fourth Supervisorial District.

Initiated the first County Board of Supervisor's Meeting in the City of East Palo Alto, to be held in September, 1999.

Initiated the idea of a visioning process for the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

Health:

Member of first Board of Directors for Children and Families First # Proposition 10 Commission. Advocated for a Commission retreat and strategic plan as first steps.

San Mateo County is the first County in California to determine the impact of Hepatitis C, thanks to the efforts of Supervisor Jacobs Gibson.

Holds regular meetings with the Director of San Mateo County's AIDS program. Emphasizes the importance of helping the most vulnerable populations in San Mateo County by stressing outreach and the use of community contacts.

Crime Prevention:

Initiated a retreat for the County Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Commission with the purpose of defining the roles and objectives of the Commission.

Encouraged Sheriff's Department to address concerns about prostitution in the North Fair Oaks area.

Developed an ordinance, which addresses child safety concerns as related to ice cream and candy vendors in the North Fair Oaks area.

Convened the Domestic Violence Council as a permanent council fostering domestic violence prevention in San Mateo County.

Local Government / Community Empowerment:

Worked with the City of East Palo Alto to improve the organizational structure of its Senior Center and to investigate the potential acquisition of other Special Districts operating in the city.

Initiated a process to encourage improved banking services for the City of East Palo Alto.

Successfully advocated State funding for the Pescadero Community and Performing Arts Center, San Carlos Youth Center, and Foster City Jewish Community Center.

Business Development:

Initiated the review of San Mateo County's investment policy.

Member of the Workforce Investment Act Organizing Committee (formerly the Private Industry Council)

Census # Complete Count:

Chair of San Mateo County's Committee for the Count # a group which has taken on the responsibility of ensure the San Mateo County does not lose $3 million per year (the amount that could be lost due to an incomplete count in the 2000 census).

Oversaw the growth of the Committee for the Count from 8 members to approximately 150 interested active participants.
