Began serving on the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors in January 1989. He was re-elected to a second term in 1993 and began his third term of office in January 1997. A resident of the County since 1947, Supervisor Ovitt and his wife, Susan have three gown children and reside in San Miguel. He is the proprietor of Tenth Street Cafe located in San Miguel. Over the past years, has served with distinction by bringing county services to the North County, championing property rights, and consulting with constituents prior to voting. While serving as the county representative to the California State Association of Counties, Harry was involved in returning ten million dollars to the county. Instrumental in the formation of the Economic Advisory Committee and the Economic Vitality Corporation to insure that San Luis Obispo County's economic future is addressed. A key supervisor responsible for changing the county's budget process to a results based plan which provides for a sound fiscal policy and accountability to the citizens. Consistently an advocate for improved health care at reasonable cost, and for provision of county services at regional facilities. Fought for good planning and improved processing time for county permits and licenses. Supports private enterprise endeavors with adequate controls for protection of the public health, safety and quality of life. Maintains an open door polity to all his constituents athe the County Center and at his Templeton office. Has arranged numerous public meetings between county staff and the citizens within the various communities of North County and helped assure public input on various county plans, proposals and regulations. Has consistently respected the views of his constituency and made special efforts to determine those viewpoints before casting his vote. |
