Assisted Living and day care for seniors

By Joseph Debro

Candidate for Supervisor; County of Alameda; District 4

This information is provided by the candidate
I plan to provid funds for a pilot program to demonstrate to the state and federal government that it is much more cost effective to provide money for assisted living and day care for seniors than it is to place them in a rest home.
My parents and a few hundred other senior citizens were buying assisted living from Valdez plaza with their social security checks. Valdez plaza was subsidizing this program. When Valdez plaza could no longer afford to subsidize this program they gave notice to the seniors that they had to move. Some of the care givers for the effected seniors organized and tried to get the city and county to provide the funds to Valdez plaza to continue the program. All the city and county could come up with was $30 thousand. That was the same year that they found $30 million to subsidize the Raiders. The care givers had to find other accomidations are send their loved ones to a resthome, where the government paid $3 thousand per month. My siblings and I were able to find a place where we could buy assisted living for about $800 per person. The saving for the government was $2200 hundred per person. If you multiply that times 5,000 people, the savings would be about $11 million dollars for the government.
