Why the new high school is so important. We desperately need a third high school. If we could wave a magic wand and have it built tomorrow, it would be full tomorrow. As Dr. Casey, the Superintendant of the PVUSD, is fond of saying, "We have 3200 slots between the two high schools for 5200 students." Working with the Coastal Commission will require negotiation not confrontation. We need to promote the theme of this new school as a Wetlands Study. Not only will the children learn about the wetlands, but they will take this information back to the community with them. The other big job for the new high school is building a curriculum based on community needs. This will involve meetings with parents, business owners and community leaders to determine what emphasis we want this school to have. If we are unable to win the approval of the Coastal Commission for the new high school, we will have double sessions at Watsonville High in the next couple of years due to severe overcrowding. |
