Political Philosophy for David K. "Dave" SchumannCandidate for |
"That government is best which governs least." It was true when Thomas Jefferson said it 220 years ago and it is still true today. However, those given legislative responsibility must *exercise* it responsibly. Sending Mr. Nieto, who reports to Mr. LaSala, to check Mr. LaSala's background before they hired him was *gross negligence* by the Council. Further, the Council ducked its duty to allow the citizens of Sunnyvale vote on whether or not Moffett Field will become a commercial airport. When the Council voted to refuse Challenger Schools the right to lease Mary Manor Market, they not only overstepped their duty, they violated the right of the property owner to lease his property for a lawful and appropriate purpose, kept a property which had been vacant for 4 years vacant and, even more importantly denied the parents of 280 children the right to give them the best education possible. The Council pushed a utility tax to generate funds for more social programs. It passed by something like 3/10s of 1%. The tax is outrageous. I will be a strong advocate for requiring a vote by Sunnyvale Citizens before Moffett is allowed to become a commercial airport. I will work to lower the utility tax, and, if at all possible, repeal it. Sunnyvale does not need to spend as much as it does on social programs. I will work diligently to secure a second hearing on the proposal to put a school in the Mary Manor market. There is more than sufficient commercial activity within a few blocks of that location and the vacant store is a blight on the neighborhood. There is a very large parking lot which would allow children to be dropped off and picked up without any sort of traffic problem or danger. Sunnyvale needs to return to responsive, limited government. Dave Schumann is the man to vote for if that is what you wish in city government. |
