Integrity, experience, and knowledge make Ed Gililland the right candidate for MUSD Governing BoardMonrovia Unified School District has improved greatly in the past decade. However, we are facing new challenges that require proven leadership and a commitment to excellence that will carry Monrovia schools into a new millennium. We must improve math and reading skills and better prepare our students for the SAT 9 tests. We must address the issue of spinal health associated with our students carrying heavy book in their backpacks with no lockers for storage. We must take advantage of our opportunities to further improve cooperation of our City, schools, and commerce to provide totally coordinated programs for the youth/students of Monrovia. We must work closely with State and Federal Legislators and education officials to improve funding for our schools, to provide realistic progress assessment tools, and to insure we can provide a safe learning environment for our students. We need leadership that can focus available resources to clarify the problems and bring about the needed improvements. We have excellent students, competent administrators, and teachers and staff that are capable of great things. Monrovia has a heritage of progress through unity. It is said that it takes the whole village to raise a child. We certainly have that potential in Monrovia. Our school board must insure it all comes together to make MUSD the best it can be for our students. My background, education, interest, and experience make me confident that I can help provide that leadership. Thirty years of managing complex engineering and resource management organizations and programs have taught me effective leadership. I was named the US Forest Service's "National Engineering Manager of the Year" for 1998 and cited for providing a consistently high level of leadership during my ten years service as Engineering Staff Officer for the Angeles National Forest. Over the past 18 years I have served at least 12 years on the Board of trustees for my church, at least 10 years as Sunday School Superintendant, and over 15 years as a Sunday School teacher. Five years of volunteer work in Monrovia Schools have given me a current working knowledge of the issues facing MUSD and the inner workings of the school system. I have served as Big M president and am currently a member of the "Curriculum, Program, and Staff Development Committee", "Planning Committee", United Parents for Students, and track and football booster clubs at the High School . I am also fortunate to have the council of my wife, Connie James-Gililland a child development specialist and pre-school director who has been an active member and officer in PTA at Clifton and Mayflower for over 12 years and committee and club member at Monrovia High for the past 5 years. I have participated in the Monrovia Leadership Academy and gained a firm understand the workings of our City government, our School District, our Chamber of Commerce and our businesses. I look forward to serving the people of Monrovia. Andrew "Ed" Gililland |
