CHARLES OLLIVIER, Harbor Commissioner, District 5 Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District

CHARLES OLLIVIER and his wife, Carol, have lived in McKinleyville since 1978, raising a family of one girl and four boys. They have four grandchildren. Charles was born and raised in France. Completing his education in France, he moved to the United States with his parents in 1951. A graduate of Arcata High School in 1953, Charles attended Humboldt State University majoring in language and economics. He worked in a local plywood mill for 12 years, and was a member of the AFL-CIO.

Working as a longshoreman for 34 years, Charles served the International Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union #14 as President for 15 terms. He has been active as its Caucus Delegate, and represented the Port of Eureka at West Coast port meetings. He served many terms as a Labor Relations Committee member.

Elected to the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District in 1991, Charles was reelected in 1995. With an acute interest in the community and his drive to provide jobs at a living wage, Charles is keenly aware of Humboldt Bay's economic impact on the entire county.

Shipping knowledge and other bay activities is an attribute Charles brings to his position as Harbor Commissioner. Of major importance is his ongoing work to have the harbor channels and Bay entrance deepened so a greater variety of ships can enter the Bay and do so more safely.

Charles believes continuation of work towards building a marine terminal is essential to our economic health. A marine terminal can be the heart and future for good jobs in this region. His effort to unite the railroad with port activities is another supportive piece of Humboldt Bay's economic future.

We have one of the few natural deep-water ports on the West Coast and are rich with natural resources. Humboldt Bay is the site of a significant oyster farming industry, whose products are used throughout California. The Bay is also home to numerous and important species of birds and other wildlife. The Harbor District reviews and upgrades its Humboldt Bay Management Plan regularly to ensure that conservation is enhanced and recreation remains a significant public use. The Marina provides moorage for 237 fishing and recreation vessels. Fields Landing boat launching ramp and the Shelter Cove boat launching facility are also important to recreational boaters.

Charles wants to continue being part of the successful direction the Harbor District has taken to modernize Humboldt Bay and take it into the 21st Century, as an active and worthwhile contributor to the area's economy.
