Candidate statement for Sue Yang, LTUSD School Board

By Sue B. Yang

Candidate for Board member; Lake Tahoe Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I can bring to the LTUSD school board a broad perspective that includes detailed knowledge of the District; an understanding of the budgeting process; an ability to be objective and fair and an appreciation of the diverse needs of the LTUSD and the community.
I chose to run for the LTUSD school board because I have been involved in the district for the past 11 years and feel that I can bring a broad perspective and objectivity to this position.

I have managed large numbers of people in the business environment and have always been successful. One of the reasons for my success has been an ability to work well as a member of a team to accomplish important tasks. It is a high priority for this district that we perform as a cohesive unit including board members, district personnel, staff, teachers and community members. It is essential that we effectively communicate across all areas, establishing and maintaining trust and common goals. One goal must be to provide a quality education to all children of our community.

It is the job of the district to provide the teachers in this community with the necessary tools and training to adequately educate our children. We must also ensure that methods of accountability are in place, such that each member of our team understands his or her responsibility and that parents, children, teachers, administrators, staff and school board members can fulfill these responsibilities effectively. I have taught for many years in a variety of venues and understand the needs of teachers, students and parents.

Another goal of this district must be to prudently manage and administer our tax dollars allocated to education. I have years of experience developing and managing large budgets within the private sector. While I understand that school district budgets are quite different from private enterprise budgets, my experience in fiscal responsibility is a great strength. Having served on the Budget Advisory Committee to the district during the spring of this year, I gained a much broader understanding of the financial challenges that LTUSD faces in the coming years and am willing to address them.

I will come to this job with an open mind and the objectivity necessary to perform all of the functions of a school board member. I am willing, eager in fact, to devote the time and energy that this community deserves in fulfilling my duties as a member of this board.

I would appreciate your vote.
