Full Biography for Phil N. Angelides

Candidate for
State Treasurer

Phil Angelides has made his mark as a leader in the political and civic life of California, as an effective spokesperson and advocate on public issues, and as a successful and innovative businessman.

Angelides’ diverse accomplishments have been marked by vision, leadership, and effectiveness. As an entrepreneur and effective financial manager, he created a business which has received national acclaim. As an active participant in the public realm, he has made a difference for his community and state.

Angelides, 44, is a graduate of Harvard University and a Coro Foundation Fellow, and served for eight years in California government. While in the public sector, he gained a reputation as a leader in the housing field and played a key role in creating programs to finance needed public facilities and strengthen state and local urban planning.

He entered the private sector in 1984 and formed his own investment and management business in 1986. Angelides’ enterprises quickly earned a reputation for economic success and innovation. Among his business ventures, the environmentally-responsible new town of Laguna West has been featured in Time, Newsweek, the New York Times, U.S. News & World Report and ABC-TV’s "Good Morning, America," and has sparked a national debate on how we plan and build cities.

Angelides has long been active in the civic life of his community and his state. He is a former Chair of the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Commission, hosted a popular weekly radio talk show; has received numerous awards, including "Sacramentan of the Year" and the "Regional Pride Award," and, since 1994, has played a leadership role in successfully resolving major community issues.

After serving as Co-Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on Education and the City’s Future in 1995-96, he led a unique bi-partisan civic committee which selected, funded and helped elect four new school board candidates to turn around the troubled Sacramento City Unified School District. For these efforts, he was awarded the 1997 Award for Special Achievement from the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and was honored by the School Board as a "champion of children and of educational excellence."

In 1996, Angelides received the Sacramento Housing Alliance Award for successfully mediating contentious litigation, resulting in a new agreement on Sacramento County’s affordable housing program. In 1997, he served as lead negotiator between the City of Sacramento and the NBA’s Kings to fashion an economically prudent and fiscally safe plan which kept the team in Sacramento, for which he received a City Proclamation.

Angelides was the 1994 Democratic nominee for State Treasurer, after having served as Chairman for the California Democratic Party in the 1992 election victories.

Angelides and his wife, Julie, reside in their hometown of Sacramento with their three daughters - Megan, 19, a sophomore at the University of California at Santa Cruz; Christina, 13; and Arianna, 9.
