"Redwood City is a mess!" said a friend of mine from Palo Alto. There must be weakness in our Code Enforcement System or we wouldn't be having so many complaints about some inhabitants' blatant lack of conformity with the law.

The Rolison Road residents do not want any more multiresidential rental units built in their neighborhood because they fear additional code violations in an area where the City cannot even solve the existing problem. These citizens do not trust the City to enforce the code, and are fearful that drugs and crime-related activities will return to Rolison Road.

I believe that code enforcement must be applied with strict follow-up and sanctions for those who fail to appropriately maintain their property. The system needs to be uniformly implemented--no excuses for disregard of the ordinances and no condoning noncompliance of the politically connected.

Management of the code enforcement staff might be more efficient if we were to assign each employee a geographic area to patrol. If residents of a particular neighborhood know the officer assigned to their section of the city, they will have a better opportunity to hold that very officer accountable if the offending condition is not corrected within a reasonable time.
