PROVIDING YOUTH WITH POSITIVE OPPORTUNITIES

By Anne Nichols

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Mountain View

Advocating Youth Advisory Council/YOUTH COMMISSION
Towards the end of ensuring this city's youth programs are relevant and accessible to all the youth of Mountain View, I co-authored a report in February 1998 examining what eight other cities are doing to accomplish this. The following cities responded to inquiries: Los Altos, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Redwoood City, San Carlos, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and Claremont. It was found that all have established effective Youth Advisory Groups (some of long duration) which afford a viable means of access for their youth to provide relevant input on activities and programs pertaining to them.

These youth advisory bodies have become a constructive force in providing an open forum in which diverse teen voices may be represented. Teens of all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds have joined to provide positive alternative forms of recreation and youth development.

In the process many gain valuable skills in such areas as community service, programming, fund raising, cultural and educational projects, teen program development, leadership and organizational skills.
