It is a long way from Norfolk, Virginia to Sacramento, California. In his life, Larry Carr has covered a lot of ground, both physically and professionally. When he was born in Norfolk in 1946, it was still a mostly segregated city. Nearby Hampton, Virginia was the site of Hampton Institute, an educational facility made famous by Booker T. Washington. Larry's great, great grandmother had attended the school when it was Hampton Normal School; one of her classmates became the wife of Booker T. Washington. Armed with this legacy, Larry excelled in school. In high school, he was active in many sports, and was the Norfolk long jump champion in 1964. At Norfolk State College, Larry's leadership abilities were cultivated. He was President of the Freshman Class, Vice President of the Political Science Club, and was featured in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. When he graduated in 1969 with a degree in Political Science, he was the first member of his family to complete college. After completing undergraduate school, Larry entered the U.S. Army. As an Intelligence and Security Officer, he traveled the world, from Georgia and Arizona to far off destinations such as Panama, Turkey and Germany. He was a trainer and developer, and earned a Legion of Merit Award. Along the way, Larry found the time to obtain an MBA degree from UCLA, get married and have two wonderful daughters. Larry worked his way up the ranks, and retired from military duty in 1992 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Although retired from the military, Larry did not curtail his commitment to serving the community. He continues to work as a teacher with the Sacramento City Unified School District. He is the President and Founder of the Olive Orchard Watch Group, President of the Parkway Neighborhood Association, President of the South County Neighborhood Accountability Board, a member and sponsor of the Susan B. Anthony cleanup and paint project and he provides a database and administrative support to Retrouvaille, a program for troubled marriages which is sponsored by the Catholic Church. Larry has indeed come a long way from Norfolk. The qualities and talents that he possesses were apparent even then. Larry Carr has served and continues to serve his country, his community, and his family with enthusiasm, distinction, and pride. |
