The art of decision making and politics

Although, this might sound extreme, that is what my job is and it's what I get paid for. Although the City Council position only pays a nominal amount, the same standard should still be expected. The job is to make solid, informed, logical decisions. If you can't live with that, then don't take the job!! At this level of government, a City Councilmember could be considered a civic volunteer. However, that doesn't diminish the responsibility. In fact, even the position of President of the United States could be considered in the same way. The President's actual income is nominal compared to what he/she would be paid in private enterprise. Unfortunately, political positions, from City Council to the President, are looked upon as opportunities to line your own pockets, obtain power to satisfy your ego or carry out a personal agenda which otherwise could not come to pass.

There is only one reason why anyone should want a political position; a sense of moral obligation to serve your neighbor; not yourself.

But, back to decision making..... a decision should be based on extensive, thorough and reliable research and facts. If they are not presented, but available, go after them. Most decisions are not so critical that it can't be delayed for a short time to get all the facts. Never base a decision on speculation. Unless you're willing to pay for the mistake out of your own pocket. Stock brokers get paid for speculation, City Council members don't.

Many times, when formulating an opinion or decision, I will intentionally seek out an opposing viewpoint in order to force me to validate my thinking and avoid assumptions. If it can survive that, then I feel I am on solid ground.

These are just a few of my decision making skills that I will bring to the City Council.
