Political Philosophy for Helen M. Dennis

I believe that the Constitution was written for us, today just as surely as it was written for those who govern, and who are governed, over two hundred years ago. Those who elect or appoint their leaders have the same expectations and rights as our forefathers, and those who are chosen to govern have exactly the same responsibilities.

People have the right to expect truth and straight dealing from their leaders. They have the right to expect those leaders to consider their constituents' position, and act in the best interest of their constituency. The individual may not get what he or she believes is the best, but the majority has every right to expect to.

People have the right to know what their leadership is doing, and thinking. Thanks to the Ralph M. Brown Act, which often takes a lot of care and diligence to follow, meetings are open, dialog is open and leaders operate in the light of day. It can't work, however, without leadership operating from a foundation of integrity, because anyone can circumvent the rules if they decide to do so. Leadership has to have a commitment to the principles embodied in the Brown Act and conduct their public office accordingly.

Voters also have responsibilities and duties. Without due diligence and examination of candidates for their qualifications, leaders are elected via popularity contests. The bad leadership under which we suffer is a direct result of the voters not doing their homework. The "meet the candidate" programs going on in California City deserve the attendence of the voter, and the voter's responsibility is to sift the commentary of the candidate, and question their qualifications for the office they are seeking.

Electing and appointing leaders is probably the most important thing we do in a free society, and we definitely get the sort of leadership we deserve. I hope that everyone will take the time to evaluate the candidates and make informed choices.
