A comprehensive employment contract is overdueBy David L. "Dave" BargerCandidate for Governing Board Member; Rosedale Union School District | |

We need to bring to closure the issue of a comprehensive contract for Rosedale teachers.Teacher have the awesome responsibility of bringing literacy to children in primary grades, concepts and understanding to the middle grades and a passion for knowledge to students from kindergarten through high school and beyond. They must do all of this with limited resources: under sometimes harsh working conditions: within local, state and federal guidelines: conforming to parent expectations; receiving modest pay: and nowhere near enough recognition. The teachers of this district need a comprehensive contract that spells out not only compensation and benefits but also working conditions and all of the other aspects of employment. Rosedale is undergoing growth and a changing population commensurate with the peaks and valleys of the petroleum and agricultural foundations of the Bakersfield economy. These changes can present challenges in scheduling and the contract currently under consideration reflects the policies and procedures to allow the District flexibility in handling these issues as well giving teachers a clearly defined process for handling these often disruptive changes. The Board and teacher bargaining teams have been negotiating since 1996 and it is time we bring their efforts to fruition and let all concerned devote full attention to the education of our children. |
