Biography of CONGRESSMAN ED PASTOR 2nd District - Arizona 1998
Congressman Ed Pastor has represented Arizonaâs Second CongressionalDistrict since October 1991. As one of the most respected members of Congress, his constituent outreach offices in Tucson, Yuma and Phoenix are known as among the most effective in the country. Currently in the 105th Congress, he is in his sixth year of serving the residents of the Second District of Arizona. In this Congress, he was appointed to serve on the much-coveted House Appropriations Committee. He had also served on this Committee during the 103rd Congress. During this term, Ed sits on two Appropriations Subcommittees: Energy and Water Development, and Transportation. Both subcommittees play a significant role in helping Congress address Arizonaâs needs in these areas. Both committees are important to Arizonans and to serving the needs of Arizonans. He also serves on the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, also known as the Ethics Committee, and the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
In the 104th Congress, Ed served on the House Agriculture Committee andthe Committee on House Oversight. In addition, Ed served a two-year term as Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and was named by the Democratic Leadership to the partyâs eight-member Leadership Advisory Group.
During the 103rd Congress, Ed served on the Democratic Steering and PolicyCommittee and the Appropriations Committee. He also previously served on the Education and Labor Committee, the Committee on Small Business and the Select Committee on Aging. He also has been the Secretary-Treasurer of the Hispanic Caucus and has served on the Travel and Tourism Caucus, the Congressional Caucus for Womenâs Issues and the Arts Caucus.
Ed Pastor is an Arizona native. He was born on June 28, 1943, in Claypool,a small mining community. He was the oldest of three children and attended public school in Miami, Arizona. He was the first member of his family to attend college and graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry in 1966. He also was the first in his family to attend law school and received his Juris Doctorate from ASU in 1974.
In 1976, Ed was elected to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors andwent on to serve three more terms before resigning in May 1991 to run for Congress. On August 13, Ed became the Democratic nominee from Arizonaâs Second District, and on September 24, became Arizonaâs first Hispanic Congressman. He was sworn into office on October 3.
Before he was elected to the Board of Supervisors, Ed was a member of Gov.Raul Castroâs staff. He also taught chemistry at North High School in Phoenix and served as deputy director of the Guadalupe Organization, Inc., a nonprofit community-based organization.
Ed continues to show dedication to many organizations as he has served onthe board of directors for the National Association of Counties, as president of Arizonaâs County Supervisors Association and as a member of the executive committee of the Arizona Association of Counties.
Ed has been honored by many national and local civic organization for histireless advocacy for civil and human rights for all Americans. In addition, he has been honored by many Hispanic organizations for his advocacy and leadership.
Ed is married to Verma Mendez Pastor, former director of bilingualeducation for the Arizona Department of Education. Mrs. Pastor currently is program director for WestEd, an education research laboratory. The couple has two daughters, Laura and Yvonne, and one granddaughter, Alexis. |
