Juvenile Drug Use and Juvenile Crime

By Jose L. Salcido

Candidate for Sheriff

This information is provided by the candidate
"We need to work collaboratively with our schools and families to reduce drug use and juvenile crime."
Our schools are the first to be aware of problems occurring at the home. The juveniles involved in crime out on the streets are the same juveniles that cause problems in our schools. They are the truants, bullies, and disrupters in the classrooms.

I want a school resource officer in every school, so that the information of problem students flows to law enforcement. The graffiti violators usually can be identified by comparing the writings on their backpacks to the writings on the walls. Violence that occurs on the streets is usually known on campus days before the fight occurs. Improving communication with our teachers is crucial in dealing with the increases in juvenile crime.

I also want to make available in-house training regarding the detection of drug usage for those teachers who desire such training. Teachers need to be able to identify when a student is under the influence of a controlled substance. Once we are able to identify the drug usage, we must follow-up by contacting the parent(s) and working with the family to overcome the problems at home. Drug usage among juveniles is usually connected to problems occurring in the family. Ideally, this can be done without official law enforcement intervention.
