Statement of STEVEN R. SMILEY, Candidate for City Council Member Occupation: Engineer/Project Manager Age: 36 Education and Qualifications: Peninsula University Law School, J.D. 1997; M.S.L. 1995 Saint Mary's College, M.B.A. 1992 Eastern Illinois University, B.S. 1984 The Los Altos City Council faces many challenges such as plans for the Rosita Site, the future of Moffett Field and downtown parking problems. It is the Council's duty to assess these issues, prioritize them, devise policies, approve contracts and delegate actions. My present career responsibilities mirror similar challenges. As an engineer and project manager, I analyze budgets, create proposals, standardize test plans and define manufacturing standards. I provide leadership to a multifunctional group to solve complex issues. This ability to coordinate teamwork is an essential skill since the City Council is, and must perform, as a team. A unified council can pull together all its resources and act with maximum efficiency. My experience and education in business and law qualifies me to analyze detailed issues in formulating action plans. Earning three advanced degrees while working full time demanded dedication, commitment and perseverance. It is these qualities along with the expertise I have developed in my career and my education that I will contribute to our city council for the greater good of the Los Altos community.
