Detailed Biography for Sue Lempert

Sue and her husband have been San Mateo homeowners for over 40 years. They have three children, Robert, Ted and Liz, all educated in San Mateo schools. Sue is a former director of a non-profit organization where she initiated innovative programs for seniors and their families. Before that she was a Housing Director for the Human Investment Project, Inc.

Sue received a B.A. from Stanford University in journalism. Her first job was in public relations for General Electric company. She then worked as a reporter for U.S. News & World Report in their San Francisco office. She gave up her job when her first child was born but became very active in community affairs. She became president of the local League of Women Voters. She was asked to serve on several city committees: a Blue Ribbon Charter Revision Commission, a Governmental Efficiency Commission, and a committee to draft a Downtown Plan. She also ran for the elementary school board and was elected on her first try. She served two terms on the elementary board before being elected to the high school board. She has a total service of 20 years on school boards.

She went back to school and received a Masters in Public Administration from San Francisco State. Sue went back to work as a Housing Director for a non-profit, the Human Investment Project, Inc. In 1988 she was elected to San Mateo Countyıs Womenıs Hall of Fame for her contributions to our community in the field of education and affordable housing.

Sueıs other community service includes membership on the following: Long Term Care Commitee, Commission on Aging, San Mateo County; San Mateo County Housing Task Force; Friends of Early Learning Center; North Central Elementary Institute; Chair, Peninsula Division, League of California Cities; Chair, Community Services Committee, League of California Cities; and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee for the County/Cities Association of Government (C/CAG).

She was elected to the San Mateo City Council in 1993. She is currently serving as the Deputy Mayor.
