Statement of PERRY WOODWARD, Candidate for Member, City Council Occupation: Attorney at Law Age: 29 Education and Qualifications: Being a fourth generation Gilroyan, I care deeply about what happens in Gilroy. If elected, I will do my best to ensure Gilroy is a safe, prosperous, well-governed city, where citizens are involved in the decision making process. We face many challenges today; the emphasis on "regional planning"; continuing balanced and controlled growth; securing housing and jobs for our citizens; offering recreational and cultural activities; and preserving our environment. We also need a long-range approach to gangs to make Gilroy a safe place to live and raise our children. In past months, disturbing problems at City Hall have emerged. As a lawyer representing Sergeant Mark Good, I witnessed backdoor politics at their worst: Chief Sumisaki abused his power, spending tens of thousands in City money on attorney's fees, while stating he didn't have money for the Megan's Law CD-ROM! Also disturbing is the library's making pornography available to children via the Internet. We need a common-sense approach to technology. I studied at Oxford University and obtained my law degree from Santa Clara University. Through practicing law I know how to ask hard questions and get answers. I will hold City Hall accountable to its citizens.
