I have been a Trustee of the Burlingame Elementary School District for the past four years and I am proud of the accomplishments of our board during my term of office which include: reopening of Roosevelt School as a neighborhood school, implementation of class size reduction, implementation of standards and assessment in math and language arts, hiring of a curriculum facilitator and revamping of our ESL Program. As a board member I have served on several district-wide and city committees including the city liason committee, Burlingame Together, Intergrated Children's Services, and The Roosevelt Research Team. In addition I have served as one of the district's representatives on the Goals 2000 consortium and I have served as corresponding secretary, Kent Awards Chair and as a member of the legislative committee of the San Mateo County School Boards Association. I like to think of myself as a caring, conscientious board member who asks a lot of questions and listens carefully before making decisions.
Through my work as editor of San Francisco Peninsula Parent Magazine, I bring the perspective of a wide variety of issues facing families. As a result of this work I was awarded the San Mateo County Year of the Child Award in 1995 for my significant contribution to the needs of families and children in San Mateo County.
Before becoming editor of this magazine, I taught English as a Second Language for 10 years to students at the college level and published two textbooks.
I am the parent of two daughters, both of whom attended and graduated from Burlingame Elementary Schools. My youngest graduated last year from Burlingame Intermediate School and currently attends Burlingame High and my oldest graduated last year from Burlingame High and attends UC San Diego. I grew up in San Francisco where I attended Lowell High School and then graduated from Brandeis University in Massachusetts. I received an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from San Francisco State University. I have lived in Burlingame for 18 years.
