Gary Harris was born and raised in Wadsworth, Ohio. He moved to California in 1972 after taking 29 years to learn that he did not have to live where it snows. He spent 8 years in Torrance and then moved to Northern California in 1980. He indicated that Los Angeles got "too crowded".

Gary's education consists of BS and MS degrees in Physics from the University of Akron. He earned both degrees by going to school in the evenings while working days to support his wife and three children. Gary is divorced and his children are now grown with his daughter Vega living in Hawaii, his son Nik living in Paso Robles and his daughter Dianthe living in Belmont. Gary has two granddaughters and a grandson.

Gary has more than 35 years of work experience working for companies such as Goodyear Aerospace Corporation, Xerox Corp., and Computer Automation, Inc. He was Vice President of Business Development for a Silicon Valley start-up company Frox, Inc. and is now Director of Business Development for Sharp Corporation a major Japanese consumer electronics company.

Gary moved to Belmont in 1986 and has been active in civic affairs since then serving on the Belmont Planning Commission from 1989 through 1993 and on the City Council since 1993. Gary chaired the Belmont Planning Commission in 1992-1993 and currently serves as mayor of the City of Belmont.

Gary is also currently Chairman of the South County Fire Authority, the joint powers operating entity that provides fire protection to the cities of Belmont and San Carlos. Additionally Gary sits on the Board of Directors of the City/County Association of Governments which is the agency that is responsible for allocating San Mateo County's share of regional transportation funds.

Gary is a member of the Belmont Chamber of Commerce, the Sigma Pi Sigma honorary society and American Mensa. Gary has traced his roots in the US as far back as the early 1600's but is especially proud of his Greek heritage "with a touch of Scottish added for good measure".
