My wife Phyllis and I moved to Sunnyvale in 1989, and at the same time I founded a computer consulting and programming company and set it up with offices on Olive Avenue. I'm proud to say that after eight years of hard work, Frederik M. Fowler and Associates, inc., has grown to a staff size of four people and has good prospects for the future.
Shortly after we moved into the City, I became active in public affairs. In 1991 I served as the president of the Northern California Chapter of the Independent Computer Consultant Association, and I also served on the Board of Directors of the Computer Software Industry Association. In 1992 I helped found the Silicon Valley chapter of the ICCA, based in Sunnyvale. During this period I gave numerous presentations and testified before the State Senate on issues relating to the Computer Consulting profession.
In 1994 I became active as a volunteer for the City of Sunnyvale. I aquired an Amateur Radio license and joined the Sunnyvale Amateur Radio Emergency Service. As a member of SARES I take part in training exercises and drills held in conjunction with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. I am a registered Disaster Service Worker for the City, and as part of SARES I stand ready to provide auxilliary communications services to the City in time of need. In 1996 and again in 1997 the SARES organization was honored by the City of Sunnyvale as one of its outstanding volunteer groups.
In 1995 My wife and I bought a home in the Lakewood Village neighborhood of Sunnyvale, and a year later I was elected president of the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association. As such, I recruit and organize volunteers to carrry our neighborhood projects and serve as liason between the Neighborhood and City government when dealing with issues of concern. In 1996 I helped recruit over 80 volunteers and oversaw the completion of four major projects, including the 1996 Lakewood Village Holiday Parade. This year we have added to that success and are working with the City Traffic Engineering department to mitigate a serious traffic problem involving Lawrence Expressway. In May the Santa Clara County Roads Commission complemented both the Neighborhood and the City for working so closely together on this problem. In the Spring of this year I was awarded certificates of commendation by Congressman Tom Campbell and State Assemblywoman Elaine Alquist for my efforts in support of community building projects.
In 1996 I became involved in City affairs directly. I was appointed by the Sunnyvale City Council to be one of four at-large members representing the City on the Joint Sunnyvale-Mountain View Citizens Advisory Committee for Moffett Federal Airfield. Later I served on the Mayor's Selection committee for the Sunnyvale Outstanding Citizen awards. I currently serve on the Sunnyvale Housing and Human Services Commission, and I am participating in the first ever Sunnyvale Community Police and Fire Academy, which is a training program designed to aquaint citizens with some of the issues faced by Public Safety officers.
My background and my various activities have given me the Leadership Skills and Experience I need to deal with civic affairs. I feel that I am well prepared to face the challenges that election to the Sunnyvale City Council will bring.
