Statement of DON BURNETT, Candidate for City Council Member Occupation: Incumbent Age: 65 Education and Qualifications: In 1993, I promised to work to put Cupertino's neighborhoods first, to resolve the divisive Diocese issue, to put our residential interests before special interests and to fight against the massive growth outlined in the 1993 General Plan. I kept my promises. - The General Plan is finally being opened to reduce the massive industrial growth currently allowed. - The Diocese will donate 65% of its land to public open space, and approval of the final plan for the housing to be built is imminent. - We passed a local smoking ban, despite tobacco industry opposition. - We passed a new ordinance to better protect our neighborhoods from the impact of new business development while allowing more flexibility in types of new businesses. - We are beautifying Stevens Creek Boulevard with trees, and have restored the 4th of July celebration. Cupertino is financially sound. We can expand our overcrowded library and Senior Center. Together we have accomplished much in the last four years, but we must ensure that our General Plan puts neighborhoods first and keeps them there. Given your support on November 4, I pledge to continue to work to make Cupertino a safer, healthier, happier City.
